Kit Price “To Be Determined”

Sculptural Re-Collections and Mixed Media Mosaics of Personal Reflection

If you are ready for an open-ended classroom experience that challenges your creativity and stretches your ability to transform an idea into an original art object then this is the place for you!  Join me in a thought-provoking workshop geared toward the individual needs of each artist-participant in an intimate setting.  Don’t miss an opportunity to work with new techniques, materials and new ways of seeing your artistic self, your working process and the magic of your own original artwork with the capable support of Jesse Chandler.

Class Description:

Create a visual enchantment and tactile delight of Storytelling through a working knowledge and intuitive process of artistic fiber and mixed media collage/assemblage.  Transform an original idea, family photo, or sacred image from your initial concept to a two or three dimensional painting, art quilt, figure, wall hanging or free-standing sculpture using a variety of exciting mediums that can be applied to future paper and fiber art projects.  Experience the wonders of original design, unorthodox construction, and versatile and innovative techniques while creating a well conceived art piece that embraces your relevant personal themes, mythology and content, drawing on past memories and acquired wisdom.  Involve yourself in critique and discussion in a safe setting, intended to help develop a working knowledge of your chosen medium and yourself as a mature artist.  Individualize your experience through the exploration of various image making techniques, construction and embellishment as well as paper and fabric treatments and manipulation methods, all while developing a cohesive art piece and improving your overall design skills.  This experience will provide a source of inspiration and innovation toward a remembering and re-weaving of your Herstory.  Create an art relic that is theatrical, painterly, sculptural and iconic in its approach and methods while simultaneously evoking personal relevance to a specific magical experience or mystical adventure that you have wanted to document and make as a tangible keepsake.

Skills and Techniques:

Individualize your experience through the exploration of painless rendering, painting and colorizing, image transfer, hand stitching and beading, incorporation of the figure, modified non-threatening quilting and appliqué techniques, sewing on paper, embellishing, sculpting, button, lace, and ribbon work, art stamping, faux finishes, foiling, trapunto, free style hand-embroidery, re-working vintage fabrics, visual texturizing as well as other paper and fabric treatments/manipulation techniques, all while creating an original art piece and improving your overall design, composition, color and light skills.  Experience Techniques and Materials that will guide you down a new path of creative exploration from a starting point of your original idea, photograph, or recycled image using written text, Xeroxed copies, designs, pictures, photos, print ads, found treasures, ephemera, wood, fibers, fabrics, beads, metallics, paints, pencils, pigments, paper, adhesives, mediums, and other mixed media art supplies and that can be applied to future sculptural, paper and fiber art projects.

Class Skill Prerequisites

1. Ability to follow instructions independently for pre-work (as necessary)

2. Emphasis on efficient hand sewing skills

3. Machine sewing skills

*Note - (as necessary obviously, if you will be creating a painting or 3-d sculpture without a need for sewing then sewing skills of any type are not an issue.)

4.  If you are feeling like you have the ability to take risks with your work and do something different then this is your chance.

5.  As you will be creating a design of your own choosing there will be a need for flexibility on your part so that your can see the opportunity in “happy accidents” and the unknown surprises that occur during the creative process.

6. A willingness to create an assemblage, wall hanging, collage, figure, art quilt or painting that is one-of-a-kind and original; and does not follow a pattern but with support and guidance does follow your vision.

7. You may need to continue to embellish or complete the piece on your own.  However, you will be equipped with the skills to finish on your own.

Supply List Information:

1. I will be providing a demonstration kit for each Student to purchase.  With the kit you will learn new techniques with materials that you may not otherwise experience and can use on your project for the workshop or at a later date in your creative life.  The kit fee will be available soon and reasonably priced.

2. A Materials List will be sent out at least 6 weeks prior to the Workshop.  In addition, I will be in contact with each student regarding their ideas, theme and content to get a sense of how to individualize their supply kit and pre-work.  Because each student’s experience will be subjective, it will require that each participant bring the bulk of their supplies.  But, I will have additional supplies for sale depending upon what you discover that you need.

3.  A sewing machine is not mandatory but is strongly suggested and can be shared if you come with a friend.  Having a machine with you is encouraged in case you want to make changes as they arise or add to the piece in unexpected ways.  You must be working with a machine that you are comfortable with and know how to operate.

*Note - One sewing machine will be available for light sewing to be shared among class participants without a sewing machine. This class may require some pre-sewing (if that is the direction your work will be taking.)
