Rose of the Wood By Monika Shedden


     Rose of the Wood is a 16” doll ready for the garden party.  She has a needle sculpted face and wired fingers.  Learn a variety of costuming techniques to create a one of a kind doll.  Monica is a master at creating pallets of fabric designs with her sewing machine.  Go on a journey with Monika and learn how to create fabric using some very interesting techniques and materials. Learn to machine stitch on water soluble stabilizer to making leaves and other dress accents.   Add to your new skills the art of painting, stamping stitched and beading.  Monika is big into recycling and will show you how to use every day dryer sheets to make unique fabric.  This class is packed full of art doll techniques. There is sculpting, face painting and finger turning and that is only the tip of the iceberg.  Learn to make extraordinary fabrics with textures, specific elements that will be unique to your doll and add a extra surprise to your art doll.

Sewing Machine is required -  Pre class work is required    

Kit Fee: $15.00  

  Supply list 

1.  reliable sewing machine in good working order

2.  Fabric scissors, paper scissors, stitch ripper and pins

3.  Threads to match your fabrics

4.  carpet or buttonhole thread

5.  Stuffing

5.  Stuffing tools such as wooden dowel, chopstick, or hemostats

6.  A package of chenille stems and floral tape.  I will show you some interesting things to make with these.

7.  john James long darners #7 or #9 for needlesculpting, and quilting thread

8.  16 gauge wire and wire cutters

9.  colored pencils, and permanent markers in brown or black

10.  mohair for hair

11.  Beads, and beading needles

 

FABRIC SUPPLIES

 

1.  1/3 of a yd. of muslin for the body, face and hands .  southern belle is the best for needle sculpting and is easy to dye with a little tan or beige rite dye in the washing machine.

2.  At least a yd. of water soluble stabilizer (solvy is the best) and lots of threads to do free motion on the machine.

3.  A variety of different fabrics for the sleeves and skirt

4.  The main skirt is approx. 35" wide and approx. 16" long. 

      From there I have simply  sewn petals from used dryer sheets. added a satin poof on one side and

      just kept layering and beading until I felt she was done.

5.  At lease 20 or 30 used dryer sheets.  Bring a variety of acrylic paints. lumieres and paint sticks and anything else you can think of, or if you want to paint the dryer sheets at home, go ahead and experiment.  Don't worry, there is always more laundry to do if they don't turn out the way you want.

 *Don't forget - they have to be used.

 

Don't stress out about the supply list and please don't spend hours running around searching for things.  I will bring lost of things from my studio to share.  Just bring lots of ribbons, trims and fabrics to go with your colour theme and you will go home with a wonderful doll.  If you have any floral stems for her mask, and feathers that would be great.
